Fire is a transformative element.

In Sanskrit, fire is called agni, and it is part of our own internal digestion system. We have many tools for transformation in Yoga. One we will explore here is Trataka on a candle, also called Candle Gazing.

What is Trataka?

In Sanskrit, trataka means 'to gaze.' In Yoga, the practice of gazing is a both a meditation technique and a way to purify and strengthen the eyes. The object being gazed upon can vary from the moon to a dot on the wall to a flower. The flame of a candle is said to be the most effective in quieting the mind and cleansing/exercising the eyes.

Benefits of Trataka may include:

Reducing anxiety

Calming the mind

Easing symptoms of depression

Improving performance (sport and work)

Inviting better sleep
